One of the hot topics in the area is whether or not to declare the canal a “Superfund Site”. This would mean that the government would donate significant resources to cleaning up the canal as it poses a potential hazard to those living around it. The mayor and local developers are against the declaration because it could decrease the value of property in the area. Good to know they care about the well-being of Gowanus residents!
