The Free Sea

325 3rd Ave [Built ca. 1882] – This was the former headquarters of Edwin Litchfield’s Brooklyn Improvement Company (responsible for dredging Gowanus Creek and developing the Red Hook waterfront). Litchfield also owned the land from what is now Prospect Park (bought what was known as the old Cortelyou Estate for $150,000 in 1852). Whole Foods purchased the adjacent property behind the building, but its fate remains unknown. Here’s how it looked back in the day…
