San Fransico – July 2_5, 2010

Before leaving for SFO, there was a huge 5-Alarm fire in Bushwick, Brooklyn. A cabinet warehouse lit up and burned for two days. The streets were so filled with smoke that the MTA closed two subway stations.

Mavericks – One of the most intense surfing spots in the world. Once-a-year there is a tournament held on this treacherous great-white infested point. According to local legend, some maniac wanted to surf this remote spot and paddled out almost a mile to get to it. It was five years before anyone else had the courage to go out there. Last year during the tournament, a wave washed ashore and took a bunch of dopey spectators with it back out to sea. Note the shark niblets lounging on the left…

This little guy was just hanging out in one of the kelp beds on shore. I’m really not sure what he was (penguins aren’t indigenous to the US), but he most definitely looked pissed off to be where he was.

  1. I’ve never been to San Fran but these photos make me want to go see the wonderful nature of that part of the country. Having to wear a coat for July 4th, however, would keep my visit short. Glad to enjoy it through your pics.

  2. Thanks, Ma, you would have loved it. Not sure if you could have handled the hike through Mt. Tam – those hills were killers! As a retiree, you should be taking more trips like this

    🙂
