Red Hook Grain Terminal – September 18, 2010

Built in 1922, the grain terminal was meant to field massive amounts of feed from the Erie Basin. Barges would tie up next to the terminals and grain was unloaded to be washed, dried, cooled and stored. Unfortunately, its $2.5 million cost was slow to recoup due to increasing lack of business (suppliers could get cheaper grain from down south) and it closed its bombay doors in 1965. It’s been abandoned since. Since then, there’s been talk of converting the space for numerous uses.. everything from a recycling plant to a movie studio. As you’ll see from the pictures below, nothing ever panned out…
